Found a very nice (from pictures) 93 Accord Coupe 5 speed. The seller wants $1000. Needs a blower motor and it has 340k miles on it. Would you put up an offer? If so how much?

I have a soft spot for this generation of Accord especially in this color. My old man seems convinced that it’ll need a motor almost immediately for some reason.

When you reach that kind of mileage, you’re generally holding on until it’s not worth fixing. I’d be skeptical. I think 200ish is the highest reasonable mileage you can expect someone to get rid of a carsimply because it’s high mileage and they think that means it’s about to break.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Sounds like the perfect time for an H22 swap (which damn near falls into this car, can even use the Accord gearbox if you don’t get a Prelude trans to go with it, but the gearing is a bit wonky for the H motor).

With cars in this price segment I ignore things like year and mileage and look at maintenance and rust. It’s much better to have an older higher mileage $1k car that’s been cared for than a younger lower mileage $1k car that’s neglected.

So, how’s rust? Last timing belt change? Tires? Brakes? I’d even ask when the last oil change and spark plug swap was, not due to the cost but to give you an impression what they did and didn’t do to the car.

If it’s neglected too much I wouldn’t bid at all. If it’s somewhat acceptable I’d bid like $800 or so.

I’d do what a friend of mine did when he bought an Accord of this generation...take it to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection, look at everything that needs to be repaired, and offer the seller his price minus repair costs. When my friend did this the guy was asking either 2000 or 2200, and the price ended up being 1600, which was asking minus getting the ball joints replaced. It’s also a good walk indicator...if the repairs mean your ask will be less than scrap value, walk away.

$800. Would be $1000 if it had stock wheels.

I’d say the two big questions are

1, are the rear quarter panels metal, or bondo?

2, who much oil does it leak?

If the rust isn’t bad, and it doesn’t burn oil then 1000 bucks ain’t bad, I’d offer 700 and see where you get. If the rust is bad or it does burn a quart every 400 miles, like it probably doe, then walk.

Agreed. Anything major breaks, sell it or junk it, boom you’re only out a few hundred bucks.

Somethings bound to break on a 300k+ Honda.

$500 as-is. $1000 with the safety certification and e-test (if you live somewhere that requires that).

The motor could last another 50,000 miles easily. It all depends on how it was taken care of.

And that generation of Accord is known for being durable. What usually does them in is rust, not the engine.

My thinking exactly. I just want it to last me til spring. I’ll have enough saved for a swap by then. And if it’s rust free 10/10 will keep.

I think I’ll start at $700 and feel him out. He may be willing to unload which at that price is great. Said he did a basic tune up on it. It’ll be worth at least a look and test drive.

Have a 1992 Accord coupe with 340k+ on it and needs a blower motor too. CB7/9s are champs of cars. I Rally Cross mine and have put some time into it. I got mine for $1100. So $1000 isnt bad but that one looks beat just from looking in the interior. I would offer $500 for it and max of $750 just in case the motor is blowing smoke. But just because it has 340K on it doent mean its bad, it is a Honda.

Just to give you some #s, full front suspension overhaul was under 500 bucks including wheel bearings and captive rotors (DIY not labor). One thing to definitely check is if the rotors are warped. You have to have the Wheel bearings pressed out to replace the rotors. That alone will be 100 each side labor if you dont have a press. Timing belt was $350 (recommend checking). Clutch and Trans are probably fine unless he grinded ever gear. I race mine and havent had an issue. Even so CB7s will run forever even if they are beat. Just think what happens if you take care of them.

A CB7's potential (mine)
